What is the thing you like most about teaching?
I think I like the focused time to explore the voice and music with each student.
Everyone has their own unique journey, and I love discovering what motivates each person.

How do you inspire students to practice more?
I discuss focused practice techniques and tips that will help each student, rather than sending them off and saying, "Ok! Now practice!"  Learning to practice is a skill in its own right- it doesn't come naturally to everyone. I'll often take a moment during the lesson to tell the student exactly how they can apply what we are working on to music at home.

What part do you feel that the recital experience plays in a students’ development?
Recitals are important for several reasons! First, it gives the student an opportunity to show off their hard work and progress. It can be very gratifying to sing a piece with better technique than a previous recital.

Recitals are also a time for family and friends to share in a student's interests and celebrate them! This is one of the more fun aspects of the recital.

Finally, it is a confidence builder. Student and professional musicians alike often experience stage fright before performing. It is normal and natural, but can feel very stressful and cause some physical effects like shaking or a nervous stomach. However, once a student sings or plays through it and realizes they've done a fine job and gotten a healthy round of applause, their confidence can be bolstered for the next time they must perform in front of a group. They will hopefully come away with the experience of having had stage fright and learning to deal with it, and be able to apply their experience to new situations.

In lessons, I like to spend the two or three weeks before a recital or audition practicing each step and discussing stage fright.  I pass on all the helpful tips I've learned to students.

What is your favorite type of music?
I most enjoy singing Romantic art songs.

What was studying at the University of Texas at the Permian Basin like?
It was a small, new school of music- but a focused and dedicated one! My professors expected the best of musicians in all aspects of life- perfomance, pedagogy, etiquette, professional behavior- you name it! I would say it was a very practical education that prepared me not only for singing and music education, but for all the satellite responsibilities that come with working as a musician and music educator. As a result, I feel my transition from student life to working life went a bit more smoothly than it otherwise might have.

Tell us about your latest band or project:
I'm currently in the middle of recording music for my pop/electro duet, Erased Text. Its harp plus me plus beats. I love playing out and singing my own songs.

Hobbies outside of music?
I love swimming, sewing, cooking- anything creative or outdoors!

If you could give a quick tip for singing  what would it be?Learning to sing is rarely a fast or linear journey, but there is great freedom and sustainability in learning to sing with healthy technique.

Celebrating Student Achievement • The Musical Ladder System®

San Jose School of Music is excited to be the only music school in San Jose that will offer it’s students the opportunity to earn special color wristband bracelets (kids and teens love them!), trophies AND certificates for passing musical tests with the Musical Ladder System®. It was created by Marty Fort, director of a national Music Academy Association. The system has a patent pending and is being used by music schools nationwide. Other schools may offer trophies and certificates but, none will inspire their students like the “Musical Ladder System®”

More importantly when our students have a Musical Ladder System® challenge coming up, they practice more, their parents are proud, their teachers are proud, and everybody wins!
